Why We Get Offended and What To Do About It

If there’s one thing that makes the human relationship (no matter how light or deep) more complicated is the fact that we are fully capable of being offended – very easily I might add  😉

No matter how silly the statement, oftentimes the other person has no idea you’ve been offended! And yet, as humans we’ve grown up in a world full of walls, words, experiences, and wounds that would ultimately leave us a little bruised. It’s no wonder we keep our distance from those that have tendencies to trigger us.

While there are a variety of coping mechanisms, I’ve come to learn one particular method (or two) that helps defuse the situation rather quickly.

Letting Go of Form When It Comes to Expectations

This is probably one of the hardest lessons when it comes to the human mind… Often times when we have a desire for a certain outcome whether it be a job, weight on the scale, soulmate, car, whatever it may be… our minds have a way of knowing EXACTLY what we want and if not exact, it knows to be disappointed or elated (more disappointed than not) once you’ve reached a certain point in time.

I am often humbled and embarrassed when I remember the times I was so determined to make something work, only to have, what seemed at the time, the door shut in my face so fast and so hard I could have felt the physicality of it. Oh yes, anyone ever had that moment?

Two Pivotal Moments in Big Magic

I love audio books. Especially since I travel often and find myself sitting in traffic (a lot)! When the list of unplayed podcast shows 0 I can always rely on Audible for a good read.

Since I love learning new things my Audible playlist (and podcast for that matter) are entirely comprised of psychology, health, business, fitness, or memoirs. Currently, I’m almost through this incredible book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, by the incredible author Elizabeth Gilbert. The cherry on top is that Elizabeth herself is reading to you!

As I am near the end of the book I am grateful Elizabeth reads the book herself. There is something about hearing the emotion, investment, experience, the living proof of how this book came to be through hearing her words.

There was a pivotal moment in the book I couldn’t have been more grateful for. Actually two pivotal moments that truly struck me. And of course I took these two moments as a reminder to my own self and took my own interpretation* which you can find below.

Regrets

A beautiful, jarring reality check of what’s most important in life:

Water your Dreams

Don’t kill the dream by cutting down the idea with a million questions. Take it one step at a time and follow what brings you joy. We can never forecast what a seed will grow into or who we will meet along the way.

My Top 10 Reasons for Moving the Body

It’s crazy how much we sit all day isn’t it? I don’t know about you but there are times when I get home and notice the pedometer on my device reads something below 700 steps and I literally gasp aloud and then I say something along the lines of, “WOW… I swear I was busy today…”

I’ve always known I do better when I move. Aside from the fact we are primal beings and are meant to move our bodies there’s something to be said about moving the stagnant energy within our bodies too.

I love that there’s practically NO downside of getting outside and moving your body. It goes to show how important it actually is.

Here are my current top 10 reasons for why we should move our body today:

Friday Focus – 11/18/16

As we go into the weekend I though it would be a nice reminder to bring full circle a recurring theme or thought that has been coming up whether through inquiries or observation. After all, Fridays are a bit more relaxed and we tend to lose focus as we go into the weekend with social commitments and errands to run 🙂

This week’s focus is: What your thoughts focus on, EXPANDS.

We talked about Momentum last week and how when we keep the momentum of any thought going it becomes harder and harder to step back from the identification of the story and to stop the feeling(s) that is now contained within the body. It begins to feel real doesn’t it?

Every time you become aware of a certain thought be cognizant of what emotion this thought is bringing. Is it bringing you anxiety? stress? worry? fear? anger? resentment? Remember, these types of emotions are low on the vibrational scale and equally as important, remember the more you think these thoughts the harder it becomes to unravel yourself from the story.

Give Yourself LOVE Today

Sometimes life can be tough. There can be lots of demands whether from work, social engagements, volunteering activities, or the worst of all – self induced demands. The demands to clear your plate, conquer your to do list, or take on that new hobby you’ve been meaning to pursue for the past few months.

Isn’t it funny how often we live in the future? “What do I need to get done?” Or how about the past? “I wonder what happened in my childhood to make me the way I am today…” Our minds are at work and it’s never ending.

In the midst of running errands today I’ve come to the conclusion that MANY spur of the moment acts of “Metta” should be applied. Regardless of whether or not we have these thoughts.

So…Errr.. what is metta?

Living an Uncluttered Life for Inner Peace

When I first moved to San Francisco I only took what I truly needed. And when I say “took” I mean, everything was packed into my car and I still had room to boot. Why? I had no idea whether I’d still want to live in San Francisco in a year and did not want to deal with moving anything to my next destination.

What I didn’t realize by doing this is how much peace I would have in my life.

Once I had unpacked the boxes, all within 1-2 hours, I looked around the space and just smiled. I felt a lightness within myself and particularly within my mind!

What I felt coming home everyday, and knowing exactly where everything was and why, cleared any clutter I had in my head. If you can imagine your brain as a physical space it’s as if 80% of it was now released from unnecessary  items and available for your own inner peace.

I had no idea the release of physical items could have a mental release. WHOOSH. Space. Quietness. Mindfulness.

Unknowingly this started an intenion of living simply.
