Starting With Inquiry

I wanted to talk today about the power of inquiry.

Have you ever noticed that when you begin with inquiry people pay attention? And when this inquiry is self directed, you begin to pay attention as well?

Typical statements, commentary, and self talk is, well, just that – typical. It’s expected and it’s on auto pilot. So much so that it becomes habituated. Even the responses become habituated!

But when we start by inquiring, “the beginner’s mind”, as it is known in Zen Buddhist traditions, we are met with qualities such as awe, curiosity, and wonder. And this positive resonance has a deep impact in how we approach the very thing we are dealing with, whether in the outside world or our very own inside world.

Inquiry allows for possibility.

To inquire means there is a curiosity in getting to know something or someone. It means you are open to learning. And this is beautiful.

When we approach with inquiry we are more open than ever. We begin to see things we never would have seen. We begin to feel things we never would have felt.

As an experiment, try it today! Whether it is with a difficult emotion you are encountering or headed into work and seeing old & new co-workers, start with inquiry. See what comes up before your brain goes on auto-pilot. Ask yourself:

  • What’s new here?
  • Why am I feeling this way?
  • Why am I thinking this way?
  • What can I learn from this?
  • Is there anything else I can learn from this?
  • With assumption X, can I know this to be absolutely true? (ref, Byron Katie)

And watch what happens. Observe the response, and even in the response inquire even more.

You see, when we inquire we not only allow for possibilities and higher resonating qualities within us, we are, as a byproduct, being mindful of what is in front of us as well as what actually arises.

Here’s to a bit more inquiry in our lives and seeing what newness unfolds.

Loving The Contrast

When we’re in the muck… you know, the parts of our lives where we want to ignore, numb, or just wish time would speed up so we can get to the happy bits, is a place I’ve learned to honor and cherish (cherish seems to be a theme this week!).

You see, I call this part of our lives Contrast.

Why have I come to love Contrast so much? Oh, let me explain the ways… 🙂

Contrast is when we feel something other than at our center, our true, deepest self. When we feel any form of emotion that is other than Love, say, fear, anxiety, anger, depression, etc., this is an opportunity for Transformation.

I’m not saying we just skip all the work and tell ourselves, “I’m now in a place of Love and everything is ok!, no, far from it. But, when we can become aware of the Contrast and truly thank it, we can now do the work to understand where transformation is needed.

It’s much harder to ignore, push away, numb, or be in denial of what we are truly feeling deep down in our state of Contrast. Wait harder? YES. No one tells us that the fastest and easiest way to rise above Contrast is to go through it!

When we come to terms and are willing to do the work, we are entering into a state of deep transformation. We are saying Yes to the deeper part of ourselves that wants to be seen and loved.

Can you name a time when a situation or emotion presented itself over and over again, yet you just pushed it away hoping it wouldn’t come back?

I wish someone had told me in my teens and 20s; unfrotunately, the situation and/or emotion always came back, and now, I thank the Contrast for allowing myself to open up to deep and radical transformation so that I can do the work now.

And on that note, how much better does that feel energetically?! Rather than pushing it away, doesn’t stepping into it provide a much higher vibrational state? A curiosity even?

While there is the nuances of timing, readiness, and willingness that may need consideration, the next time you find yourself in Contrast try looking at it with curiosity… you never know what deep truth is waiting for you.

Lightness

I can’t get enough of this word.

Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.

There is something about the meaning behind this word that provides such strength, peace, and clarity.

Is there a word that does the same for you?

For me, this word is a simple reminder to not give a d*&# (excuse the language) or so much of it away to things that simply do not matter! It reminds me to put a smile on my face. It reminds me that ALL is ok and WILL ALWAYS be ok. It reminds me that life is meant to be lived with the highest sense of connection and freedom. It reminds me of what is most important in this moment.

So here it is again:

Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.
Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness. Lightness.

May lightness find you wherever you go on this beautiful new day.

Meaning vs. Flow

“Oftentimes we try to make sense of something or give too much meaning to what we are solutioning. The problem lies not in our intention but the day to day THINKING or ACTION.

With intention comes vision, and from there we should go with the flow of life. The answer lies here.

God, the pulse of life, all but want that alignment of our mind, body, and soul. And how can that happen other than to vibrate at the highest level and by living in the present moment?

So stop trying to make sense. Stop trying to give so much meaning to what you are doing. By doing this you are actual demeaning the very intention of your acts.”

Maybe it’s because Spring is in full force here in Seattle but with the sun and warmer weather finally making it’s grand entrance I’ve felt a shift in the types of food my body wants.

This delicious breakfast has been such a treat in the morning and I wanted to share the recipe… let me know what you think and how you made mods to fit YOUR needs! 🙂
